Dublin Core
Title
Leather Dildo from the Ramparts (Podwale Przedmiejskie) in Gdańsk (1700s)
Subject
Leather dildo
Description
This dildo, found in a latrine, is a rare example of an eighteenth-century sex toy. It is made of leather stuffed with animal fur and covered with bristles, with a varnished wooden head.
After Bordoni's body corpse was examined, it was found that he wore a leather prosthesis, stuffed with rags. It was likely similar to this, with a strap to attach to the body. Although this prosthesis has been referred to as a dildo, doing so suggests that its purpose was primarily sexual, Bordoni's apparently constant wearing of the prosthesis implies that it functioned as an extension of him, and affirmed his gender identity.
